Thankfully we’re as relieved as the Doctor to see her staying around a little longer.Track listing Disc one 01. Despite the obvious parallels with Clara and the Eleventh Doctor’s OAP-accelerating shenanigans in ‘The Time of the Doctor’, and the Prometheus-lite issues with Clara’s nana make-up, the initial reveal had a genuine shock factor, especially in light of the rumours that Jenna Coleman would be leaving the show. Not only did Clara and the Doctor discover each other’s Season 8-closing secrets, but they were shown an initially heart-wrenching peek into how things could’ve ended. Adventuring aside, 'Last Christmas' worked because of an over-arching emotional plot guaranteed to hit you in the festive feels. Fair credit should go to its supporting cast, with Nick Frost's entertainingly competitive, self-referential Santa Claus acting as an amusing foil to the ever-great, cynical Faye Marsay (if you've ever wanted to see a gobby Northern, pseudo-Ripley boogie-woogie her way through a nest of facehuggers, then 'Last Christmas' is the episode for you). Part The Thing, part Inception and a rather substantial bit Alien (hey, at least Moffat's script was knowing enough to call itself out on it), 'Last Christmas' aptly blended horrendous visuals and mental trauma with ho ho jolly silliness, and somehow managed to pull the whole preposterous tonal affair off. Wilmhurst - who previously cut his teeth on horror/sci-fi mash-ups 'Kill The Moon' and 'Mummy On The Orient Express' - crafted a romp as comfortable in its slapstick Santa gags as its body-horror claustrophobia. It's unsurprising but no less impressive that director Paul Wilmhurst managed to strike a tone thus far unmatched in the world of modern Who Christmas adventures. You may think you're awake, but are you really?! Oh, and somehow Santa's involved (it's a long story).ĭoctor Who: "Last Christmas" Photo Gallery: Only, in a traditionally Moffat-y monster invention of choice, the crabs tapped into something far more resonant and worryingly unknowable. With the fate of all humanity on the line (when is it ever not?), the Doctor reunites with Clara for a voyage to the North Pole and a mission to overcome an infestation of Dream Crabs that are slowly munching away on each supporting character's brain matter. The story picks up a substantial while after the emotionally wrecking drama of ‘Death In Heaven’. This is a whole lot better than the new videos that are. Yet somehow, despite striving for an adventure that's as scary as it is comically jolly, it seems to have successfully struck a balance between the two. Doctor Who: Last Christmas is the other 20-minute compilation video the BBC released on their YouTube channel in the run-up to Christmas. Thankfully, Season 8's Christmas episode fits neatly and appropriately in with the rest of the year's darker tone and overarching story beats. The need to balance festive feel-good fun-times with sci-fi drama has always sat somewhat uneasily, resulting in a host of shoehorned yuletide references and some notably family-friendly fare - but it’s a tradition that's always given a pass because, hey, *adopts Noddy Holder voice* it's Chriiiiistmaaaaas.
